Have you ever noticed that the Altstadt street signs are in different colours? In Kornhausplatz, for example, they’re green on one side, yellow on the other. They are signs of the time when France conquered Switzerland and Bern was occupied in 1798. Few French soldiers could read so they needed the colour-coding to find their beds.
